Position Purpose

This is a tremendous opportunity to join an established, award-winning and passionate team making a difference. We are leading the province in waste diversion and the first municipality in Ontario to focus on waste reduction efforts through our SM4RT Living Waste Management Plan.

The Region is looking for a creative, collaborative self-starter who is keen to work with a variety of stakeholders, building buy-in and rolling out innovative projects that do not look like traditional waste diversion programs. This role works with local municipal partners, local businesses, charitable organizations, school boards, and community groups; developing strategies for supporting the circular economy in York Region through new pilot programs, advocacy and continuous improvement of our existing roster of reduction, reuse and repair programs.

Major Responsibilities

• This role on the sustainable waste management team includes a diverse range of projects so no two days will look alike. You will be working with colleagues and community partners to research, plan and deliver new pilot initiatives, researching promising practices and inventing new ones along the way. You will need to be comfortable evaluating pilots and programs to ensure their impacts align with the outcomes of the SM4RT Living Plan and the Region’s broader strategic goals.

• Relationship building, and networking with other municipalities, community partners and private sector leaders is a big part of the job. The Region could not deliver the SM4RT Living Plan without their support.

• You will also be analysing impacts to the Region’s waste management system from changes in legislation and regulations at the provincial and federal level. Working with the Region’s local municipal partners, you’ll support development of advocacy responses for a variety of consultations. Being able to communicate complex concepts clearly and simply through council reports, public reports and presentations to partners and internal teams is key.

Qualifications

• The Region is looking for candidates with a University Degree in environmental studies/science, or related field or equivalent approved combination of education and experience. You have at least three (3) years of demonstrated project management experience in waste management or related environmental field and social marketing or major marketing campaign. You have developed new programs with a range of stakeholders, planning and executing them from start to finish.
• You’ve got a thorough knowledge of the waste management industry and related practices and policies, including circular economy principles and a strong knowledge and understanding of relevant Provincial and Federal legislation.
• This role involves some travel to areas not serviced by transit so a valid Ontario Class “G” driver’s license, free of serious offences under the Highway Traffic Act is needed.

How to Apply

Please apply online by April 14, 2021. We thank all candidates for their interest; however, only those selected for an interview will be contacted via email.
